Radio Rookies Podcast

So I did a Radio Rookies Podcast not on one specific topic but from watching the examples i talked about my neighborhood, my life, my family, and boys. I liked the examples that we had to watch because they gave a good outlook on what the assignment was and it helped me focus on the main topic. I liked doing this project. I live with my mom, my dad, my little sister and my uncle. Living in Canarsie gets depressing sometimes because i don't like all the people that are in my neighborhood, so that's why I want to move to a different place many times.

Weekend Post: Singing: Trey Songz says it all

VERSE 1:

Every night up in the club
Gettin' money with the thugs
Starting out falling in love
Then there was you

And I don't want to be a player no more
Every night in the club tricking with different girl
Thought I'd never fall in love then I met you
Girl you changed my mind
One look and just one touch
And I knew she was the girl for me
Like no other I had seen
They say I am trippin'
But I know what I want
This girl here is different
She got something that they don't
Yeah

Weekend Post: Storytelling:Animoto:The Presence of the Number Three in Folktales

For many storytellers, educators and folklorists, the classification of a “folktale” requires that it include some reference to the number or sets of three. Such stories as the “Three Blind Mice,” “Goldilocks and the Three Bears,” and “The Three Billy Goats Gruff” are common examples of the titles and subjects of basic folktales reflecting this concept. Although I do not believe that the classification of a story as a folktale should be limited by the “number three” requirement, such a requirement for classifications does elicit several questions. Why the focus on the use of the number three? What does the number three represent?

Weekend Post: Poetry/Storytelling:'Wings of Night Sky' melds poetry, music and storytelling at Merrimack College

World renowned singer songwriter, and poet Joy Harjo has traveled the globe bringing her own special form of entertainment to everyone she meets.

She has been everywhere from Los Angeles to Anchorage, released four award-winning CDs and performed at the Olympics.

On Tuesday she makes a local stop at Merrimack College with her one-woman show "Wings of Night Sky, Wings of Morning Light," featuring music, poetry and storytelling.

Harjo, a Native American member of Creek nation, plays the saxophone, and her show is heavily influenced by her heritage.

"Wings of Night Sky, Wings of Morning Light" explores themes and ideals of the Creek culture, and includes original stories and musical pieces.

"Humans are story gatherers," Harjo said. "I'm a performer. I try to put all of those stories in one place."

Personally I never read her poems or heard any of her music/storytelling with the saxophone but It seems that people have enjoyed it every year.

Weekend Post: Festivals: Annapolis Book Festival celebrates Mark Twain

Max Kalifut still has fond memories of "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn." The Key School senior read Mark Twain's novel last year, and remembers admiring the book's daring raft trip down the Mississippi, as well as the message of the story.

"Anybody who writes a great book like that deserves to be celebrated," added Key junior Mike Norfleet, 16.

Visitors to the upcoming Annapolis Book Festival will get the chance to do just that - since the event commemorates the 100th anniversary of Twain's death - and a whole lot more as well. A total of 30 authors from across the country will be highlighted at the festival, covering subjects as diverse as global security, the world's waters, romance and the Chesapeake Bay.

The event attracts about 3,000 people each year.

Among those slated for this year's festival are Jeffrey Deaver, author of "The Bone Collector"; Mark Kurlansky, author of "Salt: A World History" and "Cod: A Biography of the Fish that Changed the World"; and Ashley Merryman, author of "NurtureShock: New Thinking About Children."

In my opinion this festivals seems like a great fun time and i would love to have the chance to attend. I read The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn in I think, 5th grade and i don't remember much about it, but it was a good book. Mark Twain wrote some of the best poems like "A Dream Deferred" and he will be greatly remembered.

Weekend Post: Popular Culture: Who will win the Oscars and WHY?

BEST PICTURE
"
The Hurt Locker" seems to have the most No. 1 votes in this Oscars derby, followed by "Avatar," but, remember, a preferential ballot is being used that requires voters to rank Academy Award choices. Just as both films have strong advocates, they both have many detractors who gave those pix low ranking on their ballots. Most voters have "Inglourious Basterds" ranked in the top three. Upset? If I were betting a ranch, I'd put it on "Hurt Locker," but since I'm merely wagering my professional reputation, I'm sticking with "Basterds."

This what is being debated and going around because people have said that this year's Oscars might be a tough one. EVen though oscar night has been very successful and probably better than it will be this year, this years nominees are high competition.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR AND ACTRESS
Christoph Waltz ("Inglourious Basterds") and Mo'Nique ("Precious") have won everything and are thus unstoppable. Only once in modern history has a star won every major precursor award, then failed to nab the Oscar: Michelle Pfeiffer ("Fabulous Baker Boys") was stopped by Jessica Tandy ("Driving Miss Daisy"). This is another category that is very competitive said even Pix 11 morning news one morning while I was watching.

I personally believe that for best picture it would have to be Avatar because I really enjoyed that movie; I think it became one of my favorites and it also made a lot of money considering many others enjoyed it as well. And for best supporting Actress I'd have to say Mo'Nique because her performance in Precious was absolutely phenomenal! I'm so use to seeing her in comedy's and being funny and loving and so when I saw how she pulled off such an awesome character in Precious I think we all see that she deserves to take home an oscar. Absolutely breath-taking actress. This article was retrieved from Google News.

Weekend Post: Popular Culture: Sade's Comeback

How do you make it to No. 1 on the Billboard chart? Sade’s strategy: take a decade off and remain mysterious.

Last week Sade, the Nigerian-born singer whose song “Smooth Operator” has been a radio staple for a quarter-century, released “Soldier of Love” (Epic), her first album in 10 years, and it zoomed past all competition. It reached No. 1 with a remarkable 502,000 sales, according to Nielsen SoundScan, a better debut week than Jay-Z, U2 andBritney Spears had for their latest albums.

“Soldier of Love” has received strong reviews. But the album’s success also points to the consumer power and loyalty of older listeners, who helped make Susan Boyle’s album “I Dreamed a Dream” (Syco Music/Columbia) the second-best selling album of 2009. No. 1 was “Fearless”Taylor Swift (Big Machine). Sade is a Nigerian-born singer who is 51 years old. She started her musical career in 1983 and has delivered successful albums since then such as, Diamond Life, Stronger than Love, and her most recent, Soldier of Love.

In my opinion, I love Sade and I'm glad she's back. My favorite song by her is Soldier of love. I use to always hear my aunt listen to her musci when I was 11 and that's when I first listened to her awesome and talented voice. I saw her perform it live on 106&park and I was completely blown away by her awesome and timely comeback. Keep it up Sade! This article was retrieved from the NYTimes website .

Weekend Post: Teen Issues: Fundraiser in memory of teen who died

RANDOLPH — Taisia Grigore would have graduated Randolph High School this June, but that prospect ended one night last month when she was fatally hit by a car while crossing Route 10

Grigore will never attend college, but her friends are now raising money for a scholarship in her name to help future Randolph High School graduates.

The Nash Dancenter on Emery Avenue will hold a Zumbathon dance event on Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. to help fund that future scholarship.

"We are going to have an hour and a half with Zumba followed by a 20-minute workout," Mary Massey, a Zumba instructor there, said Friday. Zumba is an aerobic workout set to Latin and world music.

"It's very popular in New Jersey," Massey said.

Organizers are asking for $20 donations to attend.

Those planning to attend should wear comfortable clothing along with cross-training or dance sneakers, and bring a towel and water.

Massey said Randolph High School students will be on hand and will perform music to some of the workouts.

Grigore, 17, had just finished her waitress shift at the Randolph Diner on Jan. 5 when she attempted to cross Route 10 to return to the Gateway Apartment building where she lived with her mother.

She apparently made it across the eastbound lane but was hit by a car traveling westbound. Morris County Prosecutor Robert A. Bianchi said that while the investigation was continuing, authorities are unlikely to charge the driver who struck Grigore.

Weekend Post: Women's Issues: AFRICA: "Women's Decade": Greater Attention to Implementation

This article is about the unfair events occurring due to gender issues. Tanzania was the first to announce a 25 percent budget cut early in 2009. Gender, which already receives the lowest budget allocation in most African countries, will suffer more.

According to UNIFEM's (United Nations Development Fund for Women) 2008 Progress of the World's Women report, government budgets are the largest single source of financing for gender equality and women's empowerment in most countries.

But even with overseas development assistance (ODA) accounting for five to 10 percent of national budgets, the amounts actually allocated to gender equality are negligible and often hard to quantify because of a lack of sex disaggregated data.

Decade in defence of women's rights

This has prompted the Women and Gender Development Directorate at the African Union (AU) to initiate the African Women’s Decade – to rescue gender issues from being dropped from member states’ budget lines altogether.

Here women are not treated equally and they are seeking to be treated equally. I personally do not agree with how the women are treated in these third-world countries because us women have always been treated unfairly. We need to gain our power as women and fight for our rights. This article was taken from google news.

My Novel: Unknown Title

Ok so many of you already know that I am writing a novel. As you can see by the title of this post, I am unsure of what I should name this book. I have been working on this novel since I was in sixth grade and I am currently in the 10th grade. I am so very proud of my work because my writing has improved drastically over the four years. I love writing and my mother promised me that I could publish it when I was done. But I'll probably need an agent, you know. Ahahahaha! Because that's how good this novel is going to turn out. So I really need you guys to help me get a title for it; but to get a title you'll have to know a lil something about it right? Soooooo, I'll give you guys a LITTLE SNEAK PEAK:

This novel is displayed through the eyes of four main characters.
  • It starts off with Natasha going to school celebrating her 16th birthday when she meets J.J., the love of her life; at least she thinks he is. But will he be the turning point of her good girl gone bad stage or the death of her true being?
  • Janessa just found out that her boyfriend has cheated on her with her cousin and she is wreck. There's no doubt that she still loves him, but is her love for him strong enough to keep them together?
  • Tyreik has just cheated on his girlfriend and although he feels guilty, he wonders if he's happy with what he did. Then he meets Vanessa and the truth knocks him in the butt, when he realizes who he really is dating.
  • Vince is the man of the house taking care of his mom and sisters, but at school he is the "Playa of the School". After repeating the 1th grade, Vince needs a change and he reunites with his childhood best friend, Starr. He loves her, but is he willing to give up his popularity and his status for a girl who is carrying "baggage"?
I know you can't see it now, but all of these stories connect and in the end (when I eventually write it) you'll be begging for the sequel. I promise you.
Signed, the author

Taking the Stage

For those of you that don't know, Taking the Stage is an MTV show about kids at a creative performing arts school in Cincinnati, Ohio. Season 2 premiered on Thursday, Jan. 28 at 11pm. Watch episode 2 on Thursday, Feb. 4th on MTV at 11. I love this show so much; not only is it interesting, but it's how real performing arts schools are. The talent that these kids possess opens my mind to many new things and that is why I have recently decided to Play The Drums.
ARe you wondering where I got this idea from? Of course you are! Well, I went to my school's [Benjamin Banneker Academy] talent show and was blown away by a boy who played the drums phenomenally and a girl who was part of an all female rock band who played the drums. Watching that pure talent inspired me to pursue this and when I asked my mom she said "How are you going to fit that into your busy schedule?" I nonchalantly replied "I don't know and I don't care. As long as I get to play the drums!"
WHat do you think i should do? Take a look at my schedule first:
Mon-Thurs: Tennis from 4pm-6pm oR after school for Chemistry
Fri: Goddess
Sat: STEP Program at NYU
Ok so my only free day is Sunday right? But that is what I like to call my "Homework day" because I do all of my homework from the weekends on that day. Plus I go to church from 9am to 11am at The Brooklyn Tabernacle downtown Brooklyn. Help me decide guys! I want to "Take the Stage" and play the drums, the heartbeat of music.

Makes Me Wanna Holler

Makes Me Wanna Holler is an autobiography by Nathan McCall and it is one of my favorite books of all times. This book has a true meaning to it and can actually change someone's life. While reading this awesome autobio, I was intrigued and inspired by the hardships and roller coasters Nathan or Nate went through during his childhood to his adulthood. He tells the story of his crime-riden childhood carrying guns and stealing for a living, until he is busted for armed robbery at the age of 20 and sent to prison. He was sentenced to 12 years but luckily got out after three, and he learned so much from prison. Now he is on a search for a job and racism kicks in to the fullest.

Currently, Nathan McCall is a lecturer and Emory university in African American Studies and is a very successful author and educator.
